A guide to catching up on sleep

Exams are over and semester break has begun. If you’ve missed out on some sleep lately, the good news is you can catch up. Here’s a guide to help you repay your sleep debt and get back into a normal routine. 

While it’s tempting to catch up on all your lost sleep at once, this is not recommended as you could throw off your sleep schedule. The best way to catch up is by getting extra sleep over a number of days. It’s helpful to let your body set the pace. 


You should start by going to bed when you’re tired and allow yourself to wake up naturally, without an alarm clock. This will let you recover your sleep gradually. Over time you’ll spend less and less time in bed, until you sleep for a normal amount of time. If you’re chronically sleep deprived, it may take a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern.


The best ways to get back into a healthy sleep routine is to go to bed around the same time each day, avoid caffeine and alcohol, exercise every day and relax before bed. That means limiting your screen time late at night and taking a relaxing bath or reading a book instead.

Making your bed a relaxing haven is another way you can promote healthy sleep. Avoid watching TV or using electronics in bed. Use your favourite bedding and change your sheets regularly to make your bed clean and comfortable. Also try to block out as much noise and light as possible.

Once you get into a healthy sleep routine, try to maintain it throughout the year. Although it’s possible to catch up on sleep, the way to optimise your health and keep your brain operating at its best is by getting the required amount of sleep. On average, this is eight hours a night. Most people don’t get nearly enough sleep and this can affect their happiness, health and ability to think clearly. So use your semester break wisely and get some good ZZZs.
