This is in regards to Maths 3AB. I did it last year only so I could repeat it this year so it would be easier and I'd get a good mark and possibly use it in my top four. My maths teacher encouraged this and told me I would probably improve enough to have it used for my ATAR, and our head of curriculum told me this would be a good idea as well. So I picked this subject to use as WACE over a couple of other subjects I had in mind.
I saw on Studentbox a couple of days ago that repeating subjects may be invalid, so I googled it and on the WACE site it says this is true, and that for 2012 graduates onwards, repeated subjects won't be counted anymore. I took this to the head of curriculum today to ask her if it was true, and she said 'Yes of course they don't count it, we've known that for ages.' This is the same person who told me I should repeat 3AB maths claiming that she knew all along it wouldn't be valid!
So now I don't have a WACE subject, which the school 'knew' would happen. Is there anything I can do? I don't know what I'm supposed to do with my subjects now. And I basically wasted like a whole year doing a subject that my school apparently knew would be invalid.
So yeah. Any advice would be appreciated! :) Thanks.

I got 53% in class and 48% on the wace exam, my ATAR math result was 70.

But I'd be terrible anyway, I did really badly in 3AB. aha

Permalink Reply by Kangaroo on February 3, 2012 at 18:46 Have you considered 2C/D ? It's quite easy and you'll definitely ace it. But I think you're gonna be scaled down terribly :(
What about doing other subjects ? Human bio for instance ?

Permalink Reply by Tianah M on February 3, 2012 at 20:14 Yeah, I thought of doing it, but it'd be a pretty heavy subject to pick up straight at level three considering I've never done any of it before.
I'm just going to have to talk to the head of curriculum again! :|

Permalink Reply by Kangaroo on February 3, 2012 at 20:31 Hmmm it'd be really annoying right ? The final exam last year at my school was quite tough, it dragged our marks down hideously so that many of my friends decided to repeat 3A/B this year. It's weird since my teachers haven't mentioned anything such as repeated subjects wouldn't be counted.
Anyway good luck to you :)
Permalink Reply by Ruth on February 5, 2012 at 13:12 Hi Tianah, I think you are right to feel angry. It would have been more appropriate for the school personnel to admit their mistake and apologise to you (everyone makes mistakes). From the way you described it, it sounds like the rules changed for this year, so perhaps they could not foresee the problem their advice would cause.
On the positive side, study is never wasted. If you did well ahead of your time, that is a fantastic achievement. You have built some skills in high level maths and in studying in general and it was good practice to do better this year.
Obviously you will need to find another subject to take this year. Either build on your original strategy and take another maths subject to excel in, or see this change in events as an opportunity to try something that you missed out on previously -- in which case you may need some tuition to get you up to a high standard in that subject. If you need advice and don't trust those particular teachers' advice, ask around - even the principal should be prepared to help you find a new direction.
It is fantastic that you found the information yourself and have started to sort out the problem. Getting opinions, which are likely to vary, and then making up your own mind is also a valuable life skill. Good luck!
Hey Tianah
What have you done about the Maths unit? Are you repeating Maths 3AB in Year 12 again or what have you been able to do?

Permalink Reply by Tianah M on February 8, 2012 at 17:17 Well there was really no point in me repeating the maths subject if I couldn't get credit in it, so I changed subjects completely. I'm now in 3AB human bio because it was one of the only 3AB subjects on at the same time and I couldn't change any of the rest of my timetable, and I have no idea how I'm going to go with it since I've never done any human bio before :/ ahaha
Hey Tianah
Well check out our Human Biology Revision Resources for help as we have loads of stuff there oyu cna use to help you get through it.
If I find anything that can help I'll post it and let you know.

Permalink Reply by James Seator on February 9, 2012 at 18:17 if you repeat 3ab maths it will count however it will only count once. Curriculum council will take the best score you have achieved out of year 11 or year 12. I know this for a fact because im repeating myself and one of the top 10 students at my school repeated and it counted towards his score. Your teachers must have misinformed you because ltheres 40 ppl at my school repeating...
Permalink Reply by Ruth on February 9, 2012 at 19:28 Maybe Tianah could phone or email the Curriculum Council to ask them directly? Tianah, Human Biology can be a great subject and it has excellent textbooks and other materials. A motivated and bright student can learn a lot in one year and I know people who have picked up a subject in Year 12 and have done very well, learning a lot about learning at the same time: - Also, at university, subjects that take two years at school are covered in more detail in one semester at university (taking 130 or so hours study with many people enrolling without previously studying the subjects).
